I fasted and prayed the first week of 2024 for spiritual reasons. I also gave up social media and news. It was an amazing time of deepening my walk with Jesus and I highly recommend it. I made some important life decisions and gained important insights. I strengthened my relationship with my wife and youngest daughter.
Since I also lost about 7 pounds before I broke fast, I decided to try something I’d been wanting to do for a very long time.
A high fat, moderate protein (grass-fed all-organic), no carb carnivore diet.
No plants. None.
B. E. B. B. I. S. by Dr Kiltz was the plan I chose because it was simple & took away choices, which is important for me because I’m VERY undisciplined when it comes to eating. It’s a fertility plan, but obviously that’s not why I started it.
I love eating. I love to eat when I’m happy. I love to eat when I’m sad. I love to eat when I’m not feeling anything at all.
I gained 20 pounds on my honeymoon almost 32 years ago and, with a few stress-related exceptions, never got rid of it. The lowest I ever got my weight was 180 when I was running for PA State Senate and simultaneously running my practice full-time in 2006. That took 6 months of intense activity and immense stress and I ate it all back very quickly.
What I have been eating the last two weeks is summed up with the acronym B. E. B. B. I. S.
Bacon
Eggs
Butter
Beef
“Ice cream” - heavy cream, an egg, some vanilla, and a tiny bit of raw sugar.
Salt
It’s an intermittent FEASTING program where I eat 1-2 times a day, more or less. How many times I eat isn’t nearly as important as what I don’t eat.
From 206 lbs, I’ve dropped 18 lbs and went from BMI of 30 to 27.9. My wife says I look great but you’ll have to take her word for it because I’m not into taking pictures of myself with or without a shirt on.
A BMI of 25 or less is where I should be at my advanced age and I’m confident I’ll get there because…
…I’m no longer tired or hungry! I used to sleep 6 hours a night and plan my day around a nap. After my nap I was groggy for quite a while.
Now I sleep 4 hours, wake up totally refreshed and don’t need a nap. If I have some time and try to nap, I sleep 15 minutes or less and wake up refreshed.
I’m enjoying a couple cups of coffee, a couple eggs and bacon in the morning and a delicious fatty ribeye steak (8-10 oz) in the evening.
Or the other way around.
Or not at all.
It doesn’t matter. I’m not really hungry EVER because I get most of my calories from animal fat and fat makes me feel satiated (comfortably full) even if I haven’t eaten all day.
And I’ve snacked on Dr. Keltz’s “ice cream” as much as I want, but never because I crave it & usually only a couple tablespoons at a time.
And my only exercise is 0-5 miles of walking a day at about 20 minutes/ mile. That’s it.
There’s more to Dr. Keltz’s program than that, but that’s what I started with for the first 10 days. Now I’m looking into things like making high fat low carb chocolate.
